First crash since installation in August 2016

Since installing MATE in August this year I have had zero problems - until now. I was running mint and Ubuntu before then and had constant problems - mostly when this happened:

And low and behold today after opening Hamrick's VueScan for the first time it happened again. I know this is not a MATE issue specifically but I can't find any info (and everyone here has been so helpful) - any ideas what causes this? Previously this happened when I was viewing full screen video but has never occurred in MATE. Thanks all...

Uh, that looks like a graphics driver crash / bug or Xorg eating the floor.
Can you provide the output of the following command?

inxi -CG

Hi @Danpo,

you can try running “dpkg” per the update guide (a network cable connection is required); it may/may not help?:

If you have Ubuntu Mate 16.10 try the following (doesn’t work on earlier versions of Ubuntu!):

Hi Wolfman

Thanks for the info. I’m not up to 16.10 yet but the graphics driver tool looks interesting. I think Xorg is causing the issue, curious that it hasn’t raised its ugly head until now. With Mint especially I was getting multi coloured freezes daily. Onward and upward…
