New install mate 16.0 - 'Welcome' and 'software boutique not working

Hi

im new to linux and ubuntu, so i apologize in advance, perhaps i missed something

i have just ran a brand new install of ubuntu mate 16.0 32bit ,during install process i chose to format and delete all partitions, and have a clean installation of ubuntu mate (had win7 and ubuntu 16.10 prior)
the machine is an old lenovo thinkpad sl510 ,if it helps.
ran the Software Updater - and installed everything ,restarted. ran it again and all is updated.

i have tried double clicking or right click-start on both the ‘Welcome’ and ‘software boutique’ apps/programs ,neither of them have any response. they don’t open at all

tried to upgrade ‘welcome’ , through these commands :

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/welcome
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-welcome

it had no affect, welcome still does not work
ive read through some of the other topics ,and noticed something - my ‘about mate’ is running mate desktop environment 1.16.0 . whereas some of the screen-shots ive seen in the forum have 1.16.1
could that be a problem? reason ?
as ive run all the updates ,im not sure what more to do
thanks for any help in advance

HI @kazu,

open a terminal (Ctrl + Alt + t) and paste the following command and then restart if anything updates:

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

thanks for the quick reply
ran your command in terminal, it did download some updates, however even after the reboot , neither app is working
ive read through your guide and changed the update server to main, as well as adding the canonical updates
ran the software update again, none needed.

should i try downloading and installing the 16.04 lts version?

Hey, Kazu. Try removing and reinstalling the Welcome package from the terminal:

sudo apt-get remove --auto-remove ubuntu-mate-welcome
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-mate-welcome

tried it , did not work either

Where did you get your 16.0 iso from? why you installing 16.0?

I think you need 16.4 for the welcome screen https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/

downloaded from the main website, thought getting the newest version would be best

https://ubuntu-mate.org/download/ ,used a torrent , 32bit version

used a usb boot via etcher ( https://etcher.io/ )

ill try the 16.04 , thanks

*update - 16.04 LTS works fine, both Welcome and Software Boutique are working
should i risk trying to update the system to 16.10 via terminal (if possible) ?

Hi @kazu,

I wouldn’t upgrade to 16.10 if I were you as it is only supported until July 2017!.

If you want to upgrade, follow the guide below:

Otherwise I will mark this as solved and if you have any further problems, please start a new thread as you have your OS up and running now!.
