Problems with graphics/error drm:intel_pipe_config

I was having some problems with Nvidia drivers, then I tried changing to open source one yesterday and when I tried to power up today I get that message

I'm still running Ubuntu MATE 15.10. Graphics Nvidia GM108M (Geforce 840M) and Intel Haswell-ULT

Those are my specifications run from Live usb UM 16.04 in Welcome.

Few more things I did or notice but never do anything about it.

Welcome only say I have Intel graphics.

While for some time it was shown Nvidia icon in my top panel, then it stopped awhile ago and was showing red X instead, I could switch there to Intel graphics when I didn't need so much power and I guess it worked, despite red X shown as icon. I have no idea how to check which one is active as I'm not really familiar with terminal. But few days ago I changed back to Nvidia log out and got black screen. Restarting the system worked to the point where desktop should appear, because I could hear "music" play on log in. As a work around I lower time when screen turns off on battery and then when I clicked anywhere the desktop appear and I could work more or less normally. In Additional drivers it was set to Nvidia binary driver - version 352.63. Changing to open source version produced the result above after restart today :frowning:

What should I do now?

Please don't tell me to use network cable, because I don't have one.

Another question can I transfer files from that laptop during live session onto additional driver trough USB? I have some important stuff I'm working on and don't want to loose all the work.

Hi ele, I’m sorry you’re having such trouble and unfortunately I haven’t an answer regarding your driver and boot problems. However, I’m certain someone with vast more knowledge than I will be along shortly. Regarding your last question, Yes you can use your live system to move files to another drive. Hang in there!

Thanks @Glenn! Will try to do that… just need to find empty socket first! Luckily I got an old laptop with some other stuff still in it and also running Ubuntu MATE of course

I run lspci under live session still and got that output, if it has any helpful information.

Hi all,

see the section about removing drivers in recovery mode here:

Thank for the link @wolfman. I already had that link before and then forgot about it. I actually didn’t have Nvidia drivers installed any more for unknown reason  Also going trough Network in grub first didn’t help/ connect me either… So I think in the end I choose one previous kernel in recovery mode and then just start the system which let me to the console/terminal only there I typed sudo apt-get install nvidia-352and it finally started downloading!!! :relieved: It took quite some time to setup everything but at least I can now get straight into the desktop.

For now everything works, trough I have no idea which graphics are in use now.

Hi @ele,

open Control Centre > Hardware > Additional Drivers and it will show you what drivers are listed!:
