15.10 unetbootin & dd not working

I’m having putting putting iso files onto USBs since I updated to 15.10. I trying both unetbootin & DD but neither worked. It’s odd. Anyone know what’s up with this?

maybe a corrupt iso?

have you tried the startup disk creator, part of UM?

The isos work in virtualbox. I get the same errors with startup disk creator and DD.

I always install mintstick 1.2.2

https://launchpad.net/~tsvetko.tsvetkov/+archive/ubuntu/trusty-backports/+files/mintstick_1.2.2_all.deb

Though, I should say, I have only ever used this up to Ubuntu 14.04 and so can’t verify beyond that.

It’s really good in that it comprises of two programs. One that formats a stick and another that writes an iso to it.

It’s faster than any of the Ubuntu ones and has never let me down yet.

Using UM 15.10, I also have been having problems with both apps lately?. :frowning:

I ended up using ddrescue for the usb. I wonder if there’s a bug report filed for this.

I use the tool Martin Wimpress provided, “USB Image Writer”. See the posts at

LINK: [Fork and add ‘USB Image Writer’ and 'USB Formatter’ in the next UbuntuMATE][1]

for details. Have you tried it?

Tried it and it doesn’t work for me!. :frowning:

Try the copy of mintstick i linked to

Excellent advice Steve!.

I had to install an extra package (udisk) as I am on UM 15.10 and the default package is “udisk2”. I also downloaded the latest version for Ubuntu I could find from here (both udisk and mintstick!):

http://pkgs.org/

Now I am trying out UM 16.04 (daily build) which is what I booted from after installing and using mintstick!.
(I will post a report for other users once I have it up and running).

Continuing the discussion from 15.10 unetbootin & dd not working:

I can confirm what Steve said and have installed “mintstick” (you will also need “udisks” on UM 15.10!) and it works perfectly!.

Both packages (latest) can be downloaded from here:

http://pkgs.org/

Once installed, both the formatter and image writer are under: Applications > Accessories > USB Image Writer & USB Stick Formatter.

First format the USB stick and then run the image writer!.

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 will have GNOME Disks installed by default. Among it’s many features are Restore Disk Image and will be the recommended way to put images on flash devices.

You can use it on earlier versions of Ubuntu MATE too, it’s installable via the Software section of Ubuntu MATE Welcome or install gnome-disk-utility.
