18.10 MakeMKV expired 20/10/2018

MakeMKV worked 19/10/2018. On 20/10/2018 it had expired. When will the new version be available?

What do you mean by “expired”? It stopped working? There’s a new version available?

The policy for software updates on Ubuntu is basically: there aren’t. Apart from a few specific apps (like Firefox) and security fixes, the applications available from the Ubuntu repos don’t get updates. You get new versions when you upgrade to the next Ubuntu version.

Of course, this is only the policy for the official repos managed by Canonical, there are various other ways to update softwares (the most common being various 3rd-party repos like PPAs where people provide updated packages).

Now, if you want to upgrade MakeMKV, we first need to know how you installed it in the first place, as it doesn’t seem that it’s ever been in the Ubuntu repos. Looking at the official site, it looks like it’s only officially available for Windows and MacOS, with the Linux version being handled by the community on their forums.

(As a sidenote and just in case, to rip DVDs (not sure about Blu-Rays) to a video file, you can try Handbrake from the repos. Maybe it’s not convenient enough for you or doesn’t have the options you need, but if it fits, it’ll be easier to update than MakeMKV.)

I’ve used MakeMKV beta for about about 2 years in Ubuntu Mate 16 and 17.
When I fresh installed Ubuntu mate 18.04 and 18,.04.1 the MKVMake was not
in the Software Boutique. On 19/10/2018 I used the upgrade route presented
when I used the Software Updater to 18.10. (I have since reloaded a recent
back up of Ubuntu mate 18.04.1 as I found to many unsolved items in 18.10.)

When I upgraded to 18.10 MKVMake was in the Software Boutique so I loaded
it and used it successfully on the 19/10/2018. On 20/10/2018 it notified
that the version I was using was ‘out of date’ my expired, and that should
load a current version. Suseqenly it asks for a ‘registration’.

Ok, I didn’t see that it was in the Boutique.

From what I understand, this is a commercial software but the Linux version can be used freely while it’s in beta. It has to be registered anyway, either with a key you buy or with a free one that is on the forum.

I’ve just tried to install it (on 18.10) from the Boutique. After launch, it asked me for a key, I tried the free one and it seems to work. If you’re still on 18.10 (or plan to switch back to it), you can try to reinstall it (maybe uninstall it first) and use the key from the forum if it has changed. In any case, it seems to work for me with a fresh install, maybe there’s a specific issue when updating from a previous version.
