18.10 update broke two VirtualBox VMS

In one the startup freezes after “starting bp filter…” In the other the startup screen hangs with a blinking cursor in total darkness.

Breaking into them via grub and looking at the journal there are no errors screaming out, but that’s not to say there are none to see.

I tried the ‘repair broken packages’ option and that halted with the message that my python was corrupt and that I must fix the symlink in /usr/bin/. There was nothing wrong there, but I removed the python anyway and of course could not reinstall because I had no network. So that didn’t work.

I am not so concerned about the VMs but I am concerned about a laptop that has UM on 18.10 for real. I won’t update it until I know more. So…

Anyone have any idea what happened?

The release notes for 18.10 say that 18.10 does not reliably work in Virtualbox VMs at this time

Oh ok. Thanks Bernie. So my laptop should be good to update.

yes on hardware it should be ok as long as you are fine with a beta, I’ve tested it live and it was fine; but have never installed it

It’s been running happily on the laptop for a week or so with daily updates so… The VMs have been okay too though I haven’t been updating as regularly with them.

I’m not complete lunatic by the way. My tower is on good ol 18.04.

Thanks for your help.

It’s unstable, that’s why it’s beta.
Also where is the dump? where is the issue ?
Any photo ? any logs ?.
How can we help you without looking at the issue.

Dude chill, use your crystal ball. :))))

I know it’s Beta/ That’s why I wasn’t looking for a fix but a general comment such as Bernie’s. I am sorry I did not make that clear enough for you but I thought that for most people it would be clear enough.

Though I can imagine various interpretations to explain or perhaps even justify your tone, I want to say that it is that tone that used to make the Linux community so formidable and unpleasant for all but a few. I have been a Linux user for more than twenty years and it has been gratifying to watch a change in the community as people realize the error, get over their angsty anger, or just generally grow up.

As a result Linux has expanded, welcomed new people, and it is now for the most part a warm, friendly, and generally helpful place.

You are right. But how users know how to search on google when they have problems with Windows, Mac Os etc they need to do that in Linux . I don't say not to post on a forum when you have a problem, but to post after you search on google and on the forum .

Oh dear oh dear! I certainly did that my dear fellow. The most common solutions to the problem were not applicable to my configuration so I thought perhaps this is something just released, something about 18.10 that many people are experiencing. I just needed to say latest update 18.10 has broken my VMs and someone would say “Hey you stupid doofus newbie who shouldn’t be using Linux at all until you can code up a sound device driver”.

I really do not understand why it is that on this issue I find I have to defend myself against condescending and even rude comments. Is it just something about this MATE community? I don’t come here as often as I do other sites but since other sites don’t want to discuss Beta projects - and with respectable reason I’ll say that.

Did not want to come as rude etc. I was pointing something that not just you are doing. Its something that its slowly but surely will happen to this community, the users that don’t do a little research and the devs that will respond to 5 post with the same comment because they are repeating the question.
In the feature when testing something see the release notes of the app or os and then ask on the forun (when there’s some problems with the vm’s it will be in all versions of ubuntu because there are some kernel problems)
All the best
Make love not repeat post
