This is an interesting comparison of memory usage among various Linux distributions in LiveUSB from Bryan Quigley.

Ubuntu MATE is running in the middle of the pack, it's also worth checking out his 2016 results.

Things that really stick out are the effects of zram use on Lubuntu as well as the major differences in newer Kubuntu memory use.

Mate is for me far away the best linux distro.
No tuning like KDE, no voodoo like Ubuntu gnome, ....,

Stability of the Ubuntu base with the beauty and simplicity of Mate.
