21.04 Hirsute Hippo on old laptop

Upgrade from Focal > Groovy > Hirsute and Nvidia 340 driver failed to install with

Everything else went OK apart from empty software boutique just the Nvidia driver failure.
So did a fresh install from the latest daily current and still Nvidia driver failure.
This is not a bug as I found out by searching online and finding Nvidia no longer supports this newer Kernel

Everything seems to work fine except I have to use the nouveau driver for display as Nvidia have dropped support for the Kernel which we are going to be using.

Which Nvidia card do you have?

Have you tried to get needed version number for it using wizard from https://www.nvidia.com/download/index.aspx?lang=en-us ?

340 as shown in the middle pic and install error in the top pic

Please answer above questions.

I thought I did
How do I apply the patches from here?

No. For example on my 10-years old laptop I have Nvidia GT425M which runs normally with modern Nvidia 390 drivers included to 18.04 LTS.

Which Nvidia model do you have? What is the output of lspci | grep -i nvidia?

NVIDIA Corporation G86M [GeForce 8400M GS] (rev a1)

I can reproduce the issue on my laptop. The nvidia-340 package does not install.

So I have reported this problem to LaunchPad as https://pad.lv/1918327

I think we need to wait for the fix from Ubuntu and/or Nvidia developers. There is nothing to do on Ubuntu MATE here.

Thank you!
