I want to add date in month/day/yr format to my prompt.
.bashrc is cryptic when changing the prompt ?
I still want the prompt to show the current user.

Yeah, the prompt (PS1) syntax is quite a mess. A good start for this would be the ArchLinux wiki (check the links at the bottom of the page too), which is usually a good reference for Linux overall, even when not using Arch.
You can also try a generator like this one.
Thanks.
I noticed that geany does not show the _ char?
Just shows a blank.
I haven’t used Geany in ages: not sure if this would be a bug, an issue with the font it uses or an issue with the color syntax highlighter (as it has presets for multiple coding languages, IIRC).
If you’re using it to edit your .bashrc, try Pluma instead.
It was the font.
Once changed, I could see the underscore.
