Any chance to update dock applet to a newer version?

Hi,

The Dock Applet is currently in version 0.85 (GTK3).
There is a newer version (0.86) that solves several issues (see the release notes):

Any chance we can get it from a regular update?

This definitely looks like a candidate for an SRU as per @Wimpy’s intentions stated in Ubuntu MATE 18.04 - Yet more progress :

I intend to use the 18.10 development cycle to maintain Ubuntu MATE rather than develop it. I want to focus on going through the issue trackers and addressing as many bugs as we can and getting those bug fixes SRU’d to 18.04.

I was expecting this fixes to land in 18.04.1 because some issues are already solved since June 6th.

The sooner the better.

I agree. It’s easy to compile yourself, but that’s not a good solution for most people.

Just installed 0.86 version from this deb package https://packages.debian.org/sid/amd64/mate-dock-applet/download

Does this work on Ubuntu? I was under the impression that installing Debian packages on Ubuntu, and vice-versa was a very bad idea?
Last time I started putting Ubuntu packages on Debian, it broke my system, and I spent hours in dependency-hell trying to fix it.

With this package for me everything was ok(as i know this package does not install any speciffycal dependencies), but I also compiled applet from the source before and now i’m running 0.87 version(also compiled from source) as it also solves number of issues.
UPD: Just compilled a deb file of 0.87-1 release for those who wants the newest version.
You can download it on GitHub

I just installed the 0.87 deb from Debian Sid, it seems to have solved most of the issues with applets crashing…

P.S. I wonder if the MATE developers or Ubuntu MATE developers could set up their own repo’s, which would allow our systems to be updated to newer MATE components before the Ubuntu people get around to it. Or before new Ubuntu releases, so we don’t have to wait 6 months before seeing bugs fixed and new features added. Similar to how Linux Mint works, based on Ubuntu LTS, but some software is back-ported, so LM users don’t have to wait 2 years before seeing some of it.

There actually is a backport repo for 16.04 (but only for the versions that aren’t fully requiring GTK3), and I honestly think making this a regular feature now would be a great idea - especially since the big GTK switch is behind us and UM is still suffering from various bugs that came with this change.

Yes, I intend to SRU MATE Dock Applet 0.87 to Ubuntu MATE 18.04.
