So I started using MATE when 15.10 came out, and I’m loving it so far. However, for the last week or so I’ve been having an issue with my laptop’s integrated keyboard (ASUS S301LA). When I try to type the characters 0p;/ my keyboard will output /*-+ respectively. I can get around it by holding the ‘fn’ key, and if I log in under a guest session I have no problems. Additionally, external keyboards work fine, and if I run Arch Linux I have no problem. It only occurs when logged into my profile on MATE. I’m wondering if anyone else has had this or a similar problem, and what I might be able to do to fix it. Any help will be appreciated!
This sounds like Num lock is on, try turning it off. You may see little numbers/symbols (in blue) next to the key’s sticker.
Under a guest session and by default, num lock is off.
That did the trick! This particular keyboard doesn’t have a num lock key or indicator, but I just plugged in an external keyboard and shut it off from there. Thanks for your help!
If you want to have num lock/caps lock indicators on your desktop you can add the LockKeys applet
to a panel by right clicking it, selecting Add to Panel
... and choosing LED Keyboard Indicator
.
That way you can always know what you have turn on or off
