First of all, I liked the idea of Appgrid which has been proposed for Mate as the replacement for the Ubuntu software centre. I added the ppa, then installed the program which runs nicely and installs programs correctly.
However, upon opening, it creates a folder ~/Downloads/appgrid which then contains 22 thumbnail size PNG screenshots that don’t relate to much (a kubuntu app, software updater progress bar, something in non latin script, arduino page…)
If I delete folder, it is generated again. Anyone else seen this? I suppose it is a bug.
I don’t use AppGrid, (I don’t like the sound of proprietary software managing the system. )
However, if this folder is required for AppGrid’s operations and it’s annoying, you can add a .hidden file in your Downloads folder. Inside the file, type the name of the folder (appgrid) and you won’t have to see it anymore!
If it is a bug, the only people who can fix it are the creators. Others may join this thread and confirm if this happens to them.
When you say you added the PPA, is this via Ubuntu MATE Welcome, or manually (on 14.04 or 15.04?)
Thanks for your comment. I’m not sure it is proprietary - is uses the BSD simplified licence. Wikipedia: “The Free Software Foundation, which refers to the license as the FreeBSD License, states that it is compatible with the GNU GPL.” and the source code is open - see Launchpad page. I must admit to not being expert here, but was curious after your comment.
Martin Wimpress (lead UM developer) has been singing the praises of Appgrid as a Ubuntu software centre replacement for Mate, so I thought I’d give it a spin - although I’m pretty happy with synaptic or apt-get in reality. But I can’t see this in the bug list on Launchpad, so want to know if anyone else finds the problem before I report it.
The .hidden workaround will surely work, but better would be a proper fix.

I was typing as you came to the same conclusion. It's under a proprietary license, as they have their source code available under conditions... but the Launchpad page lists it as BSD Simplified License. Bit confusing, but it's license is no big deal.
Have you tried the deb package of AppGrid from their website? Which version of Ubuntu MATE you are running too? In case this is has an effect.
