How is Ubuntu Mate working with your Blender setup?
I will have to say my laptop that has Ubuntu Mate is not by me right now.
I am using something else to write this.
For what its worth, I am exploring using ******** and Blender.
It’s working very well thanks for asking…
Great.
I saw a video on Vimeo that showcased using grease pencil.
Grease Pencil is amazing.
The video is on www.blender.org

Well, I am not a CG artist but do use Blender to make some cars. (with only mouse and keyboard, no Gtablets).
Here is the screenshot
That is awesome. I want to do mechanical and architectural, back to writing though.
In tests performed, so far so good.
If using an Optimus laptop, and wanting to enable GPGPU (CUDA rendering), found it helps to install nvidia-modprobe_(insert currently used driver revision number here), doing so ensures NVIDIA (dGPU) can be used for rendering, while Intel (iGPU) is used for display.
Edit:
Just discovered above advice (at least on this laptop) isn’t working with NVIDIA driver 361.28, worked with 358 and 352. Will test again after clean installation of Ubuntu MATE beta 2, using latest recommend NVIDIA driver, and possible NVIDIA drivers PPA.
Since people have been showing imagery, here’s one of my older renders (apologies, rendered before switched to GNU/Linux as my main OS).

Lovely work, by the way!
@cinema2K and @stevecook172001 Thank you.
Image is a CGI recreation of one of my studio room-set photographs, this is an improved version of the image originally created for the final year of my photography degree.
Blender 2.77 has arrived.
I am a bit late.
@cinema2k Better late than never! Speaking of which…
For those who may be interested, Blender 2.77a (bug fix version) was released 6th of March.
Small tip for Ubuntu MATE Blender users:
Changing Ubuntu MATE Alt window movement key (Marco / Compiz) allows Blender Edge Loop select (Alt-RMB) to function, otherwise edge loops will not be selectable.
If using Marco window manager:
-
Control Centre -> Windows -> Behaviour, change Movement Key setting.
-
If prefer to disable Alt key-binding, this can be accomplished with either gsettings or System tools -> dconf Editor.
If using Compiz:
- Easiest way is to install CompizConfig Settings Manager (careful use of this utility should be observed).
Once installed:
- Control Centre -> CompizConfig Settings Manager -> (under Window Management look for) Move Window
Please note:
If left mouse button select has been set in Blender preferences, then edge loop selection will be Alt-LMB (instead of Alt-RMB).
- (Blender prefs) Input -> Select With:
