I opened a .png with Firefox and got this. Is this a bug ?
Have no idea what the "mailreaderapp.png" means in the address bar of your browser. Looks like something is configured incorretly on your PC.
When I try to open a PNG (or any other image) file by double-clicking the file in Caja, the "Image Viewer" starts and shows the image.
By the way, this applies to any file I want to open from Caja, the difference is the program that opens the file based on the file content.

Right-click on the png file and choose "open with ..." ( or choose "properties" and select the tab "open with") and select "Eye of mate"
This will set the file association to the application that it, as default, used to be.

I did not make my post clear enough.
when I right click a file using Thuner, there is a an option Send To and Email recipient.
There should be a way to configure it so it uses Thunderbird.
That is indeed a totally different question than the one you started this thread with
