I have been playing with the Point Speed settings but they do not have any effect on the touchpad of my Thinkpad X230.
Could you advise me please how I can change acceleration and sensitivity otherwise?

Solved by disabling interfering configuration files:
$ sudo mv /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-thinkpad-touchpad.conf /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-thinkpad-touchpad.conf.bak
$ sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/50-synaptics.conf.bak
