I want to use “dd” for upgrading a 120 GB HDD to a 320 GB HDD.
How is the extra free space treated after “dd” is used?
I assume you mean you are going to use dd to copy the content of one drive to another. So, far as I can remember (I did this once), the extra space on the new hard drive remains as “unused space”.
I am guessing this could all be simulated in a VM in Virtualbox. That is to say, set up a VM with Ubuntu Mate installed on a single hard drive. Then create a second hard drive in the VM that is bigger than the first one. Then boot up the VM with a Live ISO and dd the first drive’s contents to the second drive. Then shut the VM down and reboot to the first drive where your original UM OS is installed and use Gparted to take a look at the second drive.
Thanks. My HDD I believe is beeping. I think the power cable my not have been fully connected. I thought it might by the 2.5 inch HDD doing the beeping and then I disconnected it. Then I connected a 3.5 inch HDD and have not had any beeping.
I have had my system to lock up after connecting the 3.5 inch HDD. Driver? I do not know. I think it could be the Power Supply now I think about it. I have a new chassis coming in the mail and already have a better Power Supply to use.
