So ... if I wanted to make changes/enhancements to the Synaptic GUI (options for presenting window sizes for both package download and the installation log terminal),

• is the code from launchpad the code I should be working from ? or
• is the code from Debian the code I should use ?
• is there a different master which launchpad is still adapting for each Ubuntu release, such as from mvo5 on GitHub ?

If you plan to contribute your changes back to the source code, use the latest sources from Github. If you are just experimenting for yourself, it is easier to get and build the sources from the repository. Check this tutorial:

Why Did You Post This? Lately I've created a lot of patches for various MATE applications, usually by request of another user here who asks for a developer to change something. I can and usually do contribute my changes upstream (to the main MATE developers), but alas it takes a long time for a new version of MATE to get released, and even longer for the new packages to wind up in Ubuntu MATE.
