What is a good program that will convert DVDs and or Blue Ray Discs to a file format or to a “Digital Copy” as they call it in the industry that I can use to Back Up my DVD Movies and convert them to Digital Format?
I have Hand Brake but one the video files it out puts are of lower video quality then the DVD and I can not get it to copy the Digital Surround Sound audio no matter how I mess with the Digital audio options. If I select Dolby Digital or DTS or Dolby Pro Logic 2 it still only has the audio in Stereo.
DVDRIP copies the Digital surround sound Audio OK, but still has the same lower quality video problem and outputs the file on my Home Directory and you have to manually type the output path for the file, can’t use the GUI to select the output directory.
MakeMkv keep the original quality (Very Large file), IMHO it’s the best out there.

Thanks for the info but it requires a manual install for advanced Linux Users that know how to navigate the Linux file system and know how to use the Linux commands in the terminal and that is beyond my abilities and understanding. I went to the help webpage and the instructions on how to install it are confusing to me and they are assuming you already know how to use command line commands. I don’t know how to navigate the complex Linux file system.
@daldude There is MakeMKV in Software Boutique for an easy install in Ubuntu MATE 16.04 I’m using right now, not sure which version you are using or if is still there in later versions.
I finally got it installed but the video quality is Not preserved, there is a noticeable difference in the video quality, it looks compressed or fuzzy compared to the DVD but at least it does preserve the Digital Surround Sound Audio and it’s free (For Now as long as it’s in BETA) so It’s better then nothing and easier to use then Handbrake.
It was this command that seemed to do the trick to actually get it installed and appear in the Applications list under Sound and Video.
Thanks for all the help.
@daldude Theres also DVDFab for linux now
Sorry about that, I have checked the install instructions just "in diagonal".
I am quite surprised as it works like a charm for me on U-M 16.04 and even before on my iMac.
Maybe register on their forum and ask why, you will got helps!
Have no worries, it's been 10 years that's in "beta" as well as each updates.
