My hard drive went out on my HP laptop. It started life as a Win7 computer (many many years ago), that I bought refurbished, wiped the illegal copy of Windoze and have been using for years. I am going to try installing a new hard drive first, but still think it is time to purchase a new laptop. I have not had any experience with UEFI. I know some machines it can be shut off and others are a pain in the behind. I have been happy running Linux on two HP laptops, but still wonder with the UEFI issue.
What do those users that have experience with UEFI think are the best manufacturers for UEFI laptops to install Linux? For Ubuntu Mate, and I dual boot Parrot. Any suggestions or experiences would be appreciated.
Refurbished Lenovo Thinkpads T/X series are the way to go if you want a good, cheap and serviceable Linux Machine.
X230/250/260, T430/450(S) and newer models are good picks. I skipped the 240/440 models due to the fact people usually dislike the touchpad (even though you can swap it with a good one).
Lots of info here if you're interested.
I agree with Utsuro, Lenovo Thinkpad T series. I've installed Ubuntu-Mate "legacy-boot" i.e. not UEFI on 4 machines (T430, T440 x2, T450s). Before you buy one (a reseller laptop i.e. an ex large company one, should represent good value for money), do a web search to make sure that Linux can be installed without problems on the particular model you are considering buying. Also check in your search if "legacy" boot is available.
Thanks for the input. I had good luck with Amazon for my last laptop. A refurbished HP Probook 6565b. But as I said, that was still BIOS. Seem Lenovo and Dell are good picks. I know Dell even makes Linux laptops, but they are way more than I want to spend. Again thanks, at least I know what to look at now.
