Important files got deleted off desktop

New Ubuntu Mate 18.04 user. Please go through my threads made in the last 24 hours for the bugs I faced so far. The final one (yeah i think i’m done with Mate) is a fatal one though. Upon restart my system decided to wipe clean a chrome logo and a very important folder off my desktop. This folder contained weeks of work and many files. How do I trust a system and use a system any further when it deletes critical files by itself? Thank god I had a backup of this. Why am I facing so many issues setting up a simple DE?

This was supposed to be a LTS release. Why are there so many bugs? Is there no care for the time someone spends? Because I spend so many days trying different distros and spend 2-3 days setting everything up, downloading and extracting hundreds of gigs of data. I just regret wasting so much time.

There’s an option called “restore missing files” if you right-click on desktop. See if that helps.
By any chance if any desktop folders/files are hidden they won’t show on desktop, but they will show on Caja after pressing Ctrl+H.

Thanks. I tried those. No change

Kindly run the following command:

pluma /home/your_username/.config/user-dirs.dirs

and paste here what you see in the opened file.

This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update

If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're

interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run.

Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped

homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an

absolute path. No other format is supported.

XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

The XDG lines should not start with a ‘#’, if that’s the case then I guess everything’s alright here.
Did you try searching for your file through Caja in other directories?
