Inline access from folders in panels? Sizes instead of item count?

Suggestion / request

I am a 25 year Mac user, mostly productivity use (WP & Sp), using OpenOffice since Apple killed off AppleWorks. My wife prefers Maté to Mac, using it for online shopping etc. and photos. I like Maté, but I want inline access from folders in panels, similar to that from the Mac's Dock, so that I can open filed documents etc. without having to open any folder en route. Maté provides inline access in its windows; could it be programmed to provide it from folders in panels, to a depth of at least 8 levels, to minimise the need to open windows?

I also want to know the actual size of a document or folder (will it fit in the remaining space on this flash-drive? how long is it likely to take to copy?), not just how many items are in a folder (that information is next to useless to me). Can Maté be programmed to show folder and document sizes?

A useful extra would be an OpenOffice / LibreOffice add-on to open archived AppleWorks & ClarisWorks documents, going back to the Apple II version of AW if possible (I have some Uni assignments in Apple II AW). However the provision of inline access from panels, plus folder and document sizes, would be enough to make Maté a viable Mac alternative for me.

I am just a user, I have no programming expertise, so I cannot contribute these improvements myself, but I am hoping there may be somebody out there who can, preferably before I next have to replace my computer hardware (currently a MacMini 2014).
