Hi!! I would like to know how to install a new app. For ejemple I tried to install Apache Openoffice and .exe does not work and I really do not know how to install an app that there is not in Ubuntu Control Center. Thanks.
Hi Mariana,
I’d first be absolutely certain the app you desire OR one that can perform the same function is not in Ubuntu Software Center. If you can’t find what you’re looking for in Ubuntu Software Center than the file you want to download should have the file extension .deb Once downloaded, double click the file and it will be installed for you. Be careful.
There are multiple methods; in your example you probably know that in many instances Libre Office is extremely similar to Open Office. One major benefit for LO is that it comes pre installed in UM 16.04
A) You can download Open Office from Apache insure you choose the correct version for your situation; if it’s Ubuntu MATE one of the 2 below.
- Linux 64 bit (DEB)
- Linux 32 bit (DEB)
B) You can use another graphical installer available from MATE’s software boutique
- App Grid
- Synaptic
C) You can use terminal commands providing you know the exact command - below example is gimp an image editor
open a terminal using the top menu >Applications>System>MATE Terminal
type the command gimp
the following should be displayed
The program 'gimp' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt install gimp
You will be prompted for you password - there will be nothing displayed as you enter it
The program gimp will be installed and available in the Applications menu
Glenn,
Thank you very much for your help. I will follow your advice.
Best regards.
Mariana.
