I suggest that you use Google and search on “lock Fn key Lenovo”. Your function key may have become locked. Good luck max1.

Thanks Function keys work fine

The Fn key located just to the right of the leftmost Ctrl key. Your keyboard appears to have a locked down Fn key.

issue started after running update on 15 dec 2/16

I realize that the problem appeared after an upgrade. There may be some settings left over from your older OS that conflict with your MATE 16.04 upgrade. In order to duplicate the problem you reported in your initial post, I must press the NumLk key once and then hold down the Fn key as I use the mjkluiop7890 keys. Pressing the NumLk again restores the mjkluiop7890 keys to their proper state. That is why I characterized the problem as a locked function key.

I think that you should first try rebooting your machine to see if the keying problem persists. Then try logging into a guest session and see if the problem is still there. Another item to check is a BIOS setting.

Thanks

Hi @max1,

also make sure you have the right layout running (Control Centre > Hardware > keyboard > Layouts):
