Can I use my own compton conf file?

I am currently using Marco with Compton (set by Mate Tweak) and it is running really well. However, the default configuration does not include panel shadows or menu transparencies, which I like. Ordinarily, when I manually install Compton, I usually put a compton.conf file in my .config folder to enable all of the features I like. I have just taken a look in the .config folder (I am using UM 16.04), but I cannot find an existing compton.conf file. That being the case, I am unsure as to how to pr…
