I’m brand new to Mate, but not to Ubuntu. Pardon my ignorance
I currently am using Ubuntu 14.04.4 on 2 devices, and testing 16.04 on one.
I found that my preferred installation (gnome flashback / metacity) was somewhat problematic on 16.04 and was given advice on Ubuntu forums to try Ubuntu Mate 16.04 (worked perfectly).
I’m interested in installing Ubuntu Mate 14 LTS and am unsure about the point release. The most recent I found for download was 14.04.2. Since I’m on Ubuntu 14.04.4 I’m a bit confused.
I would recommend 15.10. Not only is it very stable. It is also the first version, I think, that is a part of the Cannonical infrastructure. That means you will be able to update to 16.04 as and when you might choose to. 14.04 was brought into existence prior to joining the Cannonical family proper and so is going to be progressively less well served, I think. I accept I may be overstating it a bit. Martin Wimpress may come on here and clarify.
14.04 and 14.10 are unofficial builds, they will likely introduce problems if you attempt to upgrade them to one of the “official” releases (15.04, 15.10, 16.04).
I agree with @stevecook172001 and @anon42388993 to install 15.10 and upgrade to the LTS next month, which will then give “official” support for 5 years.
@ stevecook172001, Thanks for your quick informed reply - I will have to think about how exactly to migrate.
@anon42388993, Thanks for your quick informed reply - since I’m already running 14 LTS on 2 machines I was testing Mate 16 with the goal of totally replacing straight up Ubuntu LTS. I was unaware that Mate 14 was “unofficial”
@lah7 Thanks for your quick informed reply, I might just continuing to experiment with Mate 16 in my throw away install and make myself a persistent live USB version to also experiment on my laptop.
I’m in no hurry to replace what’s been running well for me since Ubuntu 12.10! I changed my mind about USB, resized my HDD to make room for Mate 16 on the laptop.
I see your point. I guess I would say it depends on one’s desire for stability. 15.04 is stable and 16.04 LTS will be stable. 16.04 beta is, by nature, not so stable.
I’m running Mate 16 on 2 different machines but both pcs have dedicated test partitions. I have a network drive so all my data is available to Ubuntu 14, Mate 16, and Windows 7. I know what I want and take my time. When I commit to testing a new OS I always have a fall back. 90% of my computing now is on Mate (with the exception of photos)
