Malformed line 4 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list (type)

Hi, Upon restarting my laptop, I got a red button warning sign on the upper right of my screen. When typing sudo apt-get update, I get the following error:

E: Malformed line 4 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/signal-xenial.list (type)
E: The list of sources could not be read.

Line 4 says only: # newer versions of the distribution.

I'm rather new to Ubuntu. Can somebody please help me out finding the error in line 4?

Which version of Ubuntu MATE are you using?
If it's Ubuntu MATE 16.04 then keep in mind that that version is EOL (End Of Life) and isn't supported anymore.

Ubuntu itself is supported for 5 years on the desktop but all of its other flavors, like Ubuntu Mate, Xubuntu, Kubuntu etc., are only supported for 3 years.

Your best bet would be doing a fresh install of Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm using Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS

Plain Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS with the Gnome Desktop? Then you should seek support at their support media as described here: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/supporting-users/20

Our forum is specific for support with Ubuntu MATE.
