Mate 16.04LTS “Places” is opening clicked item in an editor instead of going there. When I click on “Places” on the upper bar and select a bookmarked item, instead of taking me there, it is opening that directory in my default editor. I believe this started after an automated update.

Go to "system/preferences/personal/preferred applications" and click on the "system" tab

Make sure the "file manager" option is set to "Caja".

Then close and try your places menu again. It should have fixed it.
