I installed 1.14.1 on my Ubuntu-Mate 16.04 test system (32-bit, old Centrino upgraded from 15.10) from the ppa, and frankly other that the System->AboutMate dialog, I don’t notice any differences after rebooting. I guess this is good, but what are the disadvantages of leaving well enough alone vs. moving to 1.14.1 for a system I really use?
I can get pretty aggressive trying new things on this old 32-bit system as its just a test system with little real use since its battery is dead.
Hi Wally - I upgraded and things look better - its more responsive - its a whole lot of little things that make the upgrade worthwhile.
I’m running 16.10 which has m1.14 by default. This setup is rough around the edges and I cannot say for sure what you will experience in 16o4. But if you are less than happy with 1.14 you should be able to revert back to 1.12 with ppa-purge.

I think in 16.10 its still beta and is built with GTK3 so I'd be surprised if there weren't any rough edges. Now is the Gnome3 main meuu in 16.10? Still double wide in the lower left corner ala Windows7? Something I never warmed up to when I tried Mint-mate.
I've played with it for the past hour or so on my lame laptop and no issues, its a pretty old and slow machine but Mate brings new life to it! Can't say I use this machine enough to notice if its became more responsive or not with the upgrade, but its definitely use-able, something it wasn't with Unity.
Good to know I can roll back if I discover issues.

I already upgraded a VM and must admit also seeing little difference with 1.14. I had to see ppa-purge in action and it worked perfectly (except update-apt-xapian-index crashed which is minor and most won’t have installed anyway).
I’m still mixed about trying 1.14 in my main box and suspect some others are, too. Especially those of us looking towards 18.04 and not 16.10.
Thanks
Nice to know it works. I'm leaving my 16o4 install as is too.
