After a game installation, my top panel was messed up. ( I have Mate panel 1.12.2)
The shutdown icon was gone, etc.
I thought that if there was a config file that could be backed up, I could restore the panel for the next time.

I just found that in Mate Tweak there is an option to Save Panel Layout.
Is that would i would need to restore my panel?
If so, do I just replace the corrupt one with the backed up one?
When you first set up a panel to your liking, it is a good idea to save the layout. Then, if it gets corrupted, you just re-load the good version.
However if it has been corrupted already, then your only option is to reload the default panel and rebuild it to your liking. But, then, immediately save the layout in case it ever gets corrupted again.
Is there a way to have more than one custom panel?
I tried that. I was not able to reconstruct it like my original.
I would think so.
Not tested but…
Panels are in /usr/share/mate-panel/layouts/
Backup your current panel first.
Then try renaming it.
Then delete panel and build your new one and save it.
Thanks. I did copy my custom .panel and .layout file and renamed to custom.layout and custom.panel and restarted the machine. This new profile did not come up in the Mate Tweak drop down menu. I will have experiment more later. But at least it seems to be a way to manually back up a configuration.
Which specific aspect were you unable to reconstruct?
Going from right to left, I used to have power off, date/time,connections and battery.
It’s no big deal.
There’s a new feature in Ubuntu MATE 18.04 where you can right click a panel and reset it
thanks.
I will install it when it becomes a LT release.
I believe all of those items can be found in the “Add to panel” list

Thanks for the help.
