Memory upgraded but not recognized

How do I refresh the system information? I upgraded from 8gig to 16gig on my Lenovo laptop, the system bios recognizes it but Ubuntu Mate 14.04 still only sees 6.7gig of the original 8gig

strange, since I added 8 GB to my Desktop (mate 15.10) 2 days ago and it recognized the memory as 15.6 GB (there is some cache memory as well. What does free -m report? or cat /proc/meminfo ?

Got it figured out, of the two 8gig sticks I got at Best Buy, one is bad. The other when combined with one of the 4gig, gives me 12gig, actually 10.8gig but I think the GPU is using the rest. The other 8gig stick when combined with an original 4gig stick shows 3.8gig. What threw me was the machine itself in bios recognized 16gig…
This issue is a non-issue, or at least a different issue. I don’t know how to delete this post but it should probably be removed…
I appreciate you taking the time to respond to this post anyway, thank you

I think the post should remain on the basis that someone else may have a similar problem, and the information here may point them in the direction of bad memory modules.
