Hi there,
I have 2 OS: Win 7 & Ubuntu Mate (UM).
My work is being done in Open Office, updated.
The last was installed following Apache instructions on https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/instructions.html#linux-deb.
I also tried "Ask Ubuntu" and this forum. Installed gimp.
However, when I attached HD Transcend to PC, my odt files weren't recognized by UM.
Please help.
Kindly note, I'm just a couple days
with Linux OS.
Thank you for your time.
Igor
Certainly not a direct answer ... possibly consider switching to LibreOffice; I've found it works well on Win 7 & 10 and UM 18. When I switched from OO to LO nothing was lost - completely seemless
Thank you, Pfeiffer.
If I remember correctly, UM was recommended by somebody as OS able to accommodate QQ.
I'm afraid, LO is OK to start or continue to do something, but not to open 1200 formatted pages without any mess up.
Got to seek some alternatives for OO with UM.
Thanks anyway. Igor
What does it mean that odt files weren't recognized by UM?
Is openoffice installed, right?
So open up openoffice then file-open and choose the file, then let us know.
Or from caja, select and oft file, right mouse, properties, open with, and select openoffice.
Howdy, Francesco,
Thank you for your kind attention.
OO has been downloaded, deleted, downloaded again, etc. many times. But the installation failed. Believe it or not, I tried OO site and every advice which could be found on the Internet.
So, the problem is the installation.
I tested it by trying to open odt files on my Transcend HD. Zero.
Shall I try to uninstall OS UM and install it again? For when I installed it, the "minimum" was chosen. Maybe, something was missed?
Igor
Hello igor
Your question - should you do a fresh installation - I suggest yes. Do a normal "full" installation. Then try using your documents with LibreOffice. LibreOffice should not present any problems opening open document formats. If you can get LibreOfice installed successfully, and the problem with your old files persists, try posting on the LibreOffice help forum (https://ask.libreoffice.org/en/questions/).
Have you seen these postings giving advice:

Hope some of that helps.
QUESTION
What exactly do you mean by "HD Transcend"?
- Is this an external drive?
- If it is an external drive, is it formatted with a Linux compatible file system?
Thank you, AlpineJohn.
Will try.
As for Libre, I already tried. Installed on Windows and Ubuntu. And had to uninstall. By reasons unknown to me, it opened my files but did it ugly. Besides, Libre hadn't the Help stuff installed like OpenOffice.
"Transcend" is the external stuff. Like a flash-jack. But "formatted with a Linux compatible file system" is yet some "terra incognita." Sorry.
GOD bless. Igor
