PDF Thumbnail Problem

I am using UbuntuMate 16.10 and when I change cover of an ebook by using Master PDF Editor, the pdf thumbnail did not update.

I’ve tried deleting the file and replacing it, say from my Document Directory to Desktop and from one drive to another. Sometimes the thumbnail will be updated and sometime it did not update.

Is there a solution to this problem?

Let’s look at things differently if you don’t mind. Have you got another live system that you could boot? Say for example a simple Ubuntu (Regular) ISO? If so, boot on it and retry what you’re doing. Is the problem still persistent? If so, then it’s possible that the software as a problem. In which case you would need to check in with those guys.

In the event that it works on another system then we can start blaming UM.

Also, does it behave like that on all ebook covers or just one?

Thank you for your advice. I have tested in cinnamon and kubuntu 16.10 by installing both desktops via ppa and apt-get install kubuntu-desktops respectively.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Capture a cover from web and save it as a cover.png file.
  2. Go to terminal and $convert cover.png cover.pdf
  3. Use Master PDF Editor (the free version) to add cover.pdf to the front page of my ebook
  4. Save (Replace the old file). There is no problem by saving to a new file name.

The following problems was observed.

  1. By performing task 2, both Cinnamon and Kubuntu file manager generate a thumbnail for cover.pdf which is identical to the cover.png I’ve captured.
  2. By performing task 4, when save the new file to replace the old file with the pdf editor, both cinnamon and kubuntu will regenerate and display a new thumbnail. Mate keep displaying the old picture.

After testing from cinnamon and kubuntu I came back to Mate performed the task once again and the problem still exists.

Sometimes the ebook cover will be updated when I cut and paste from one place, say from ~/Download to ~/desktop to another and sometimes it do not update. Sorry that I cannot reproduce the matching scenerios for those.

(A side issue) After testing on Cinnamon and Kubuntu I want to perform a test on Ubuntu but the system forbid me to install ubuntu-desktop, saying that:

dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/account-plugin-google_0.13+16.10.20160929.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb (–unpack):
trying to overwrite ‘/etc/signon-ui/webkit-options.d/accounts.google.com.conf’, which is also in package kaccounts-providers 4:16.04.3-0ubuntu1
Errors were encountered while processing:
/var/cache/apt/archives/account-plugin-google_0.13+16.10.20160929.1-0ubuntu1_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I finally get Ubuntu installed alongside and found that Ubuntu also re-generate the thumbnail after replacing the old file.

Nice analysis! Sadly I cannot be of any further help as I believe the next step is to speak w/ the vendor and submit them what you have given me. Hopefully they are already aware of it and are working on a fix but, of course, we cannot be too sure.
