Permissions and/or ownership issue with file server

I recently setup a file server with a raid 1 array directly connected up to my router to use with my htpc. I could have stored the files locally on my htpc but it wanted to be able to access the files from my other systems and the htpc can only be connected wireless. I seem to be able to edit things in Caja fine but I’m having problems ripping cds on my htpc and saving them to the music library on the server as well as editing the id3 tags after they’ve been ripped. It took playing with permissions a bit to get editing the id3 tags working at all. It works fine a file at a time but if I try to do a whole album or more it takes forever to save it. Also for a while ripping cds worked fine but eventually it stopped working. I haven’t had much of a chance to mess with it since.

As I understand it I have the raid array and all files owned by the local user on the file server. Permissions are set so that the users in group sambashare can read/write. What am I doing wrong?

I should add I only have 2 users setup. The local account and an account named “user” all the other computers share. Could this be causing a problem?

I’ll just mention quickly that there’s been a sambda security update recently and that samba tends to break when that happens…

I doubt that’s related. I only got everything functioning as much as it is yesterday.

Verify the local account and user account belongs to sambashare group (id will provide that).
Perms are set as 775. Maybe the top dir at htpc has other permissions or is owned by root.
