Places in General Doesn't Open Caja and Recent Documents Opens Incorrect App

I'm using Mate 24.04.

I have two problems with Places.

  1. Click on Places to get drop down.
  2. Select a Place aka directory.
  3. An app other than Caja opens.

Similarly,

  1. Click on Places to get drop down.
  2. Select a file in Recent Documents
  3. Usually, the text editor Geany opens but sometimes another wrong app opens
  4. Some file extensions work correctly like JPG and PDF

Yes, this is a duplicate from me from July '24, which didn't get a good answer then. The situation got worse, which is why I'm posting again.

What do I change to fix this?

You inspect and correct mime file types' associations with proper applications.

  • In GUI invoke System -> Preferences -> Personal -> Preferred Applications menu entry and ensure correct settings.
  • Inspect predefined mime types in etc\mime.types and make corrections, if any.
  • Continue with xdg-mime command to inspect mime associations and even remove / reinstall associations from file. (See man xdg-mime for more information)
  • Familiarise yourself with shared-mime-info-spec and mime-apps-spec
  • Dive deep into the internet search...

Thank you. I found that Caja was not selected in the preferred applications. I just checked again, and it was missing any selection.
