Suddenly I can no longer set Eye of Mate as my Preferred Application for the Image Viewer group of applications under Preferences -> Personal -> Preferred Applications. It is not listed anymore. It used to be set as the preferred application, but the list box shows now an empty selection and clicking it no longer lists Eye of Mate.
The exact same has happened to the Multimedia Player preferred applications. Clementine is no longer listed and used to be the preferred application.
I’m trying to make sense of the update-alternatives command man page. But I just can’t understand the process. How can I rejoin these two applications to be my Preferred applications?
One other way you can set file associations is to right click a given file and choose "properties". Then go to the "open with" tab and select the program you want to be associated with that type of file. Thereafter, whenever you double click a file of that type, it will always open with the chosen application. See below:
That is fine. But here the issue is that I would prefer to avoid having to set individual mime types. Image files for instance can run across tenths of different types, while sound files aren’t too far off.
Preferred Applications avoid that trouble of setting all the different types.
I suppose one solution may be to re-install the affected programs, so that it can register its file types again.
