Problems installing on Dell N5010

When trying to install Ubuntu Mate 18.04.3 from a USB, I get up to setting the password for the hard disk and then it just hangs and I don't know why or how to get past this. I have 4 gigs of RAM. I also noticed that one of the cores are almost always operating at 100% (in Windows and in Mate) and also can't figure out why. I verified the SHA256 Hash and I can use the OS when clicking on Try Ubuntu but when just trying the OS I also get an error "The installer encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will now be run so that you may investigate the problem or try installing again" but I can still use the OS without problems. What could be causing these installation problems?

Hi,
It sounds a "hardware" problem, while both systems (Win and Ubuntu) shows 100% rare core working. So there's nothing to do with the OS. What I would do is to update your BIOS version, if there's a new version, look at that and put bios configuration on default. Good idea also to change CMOS battery (don't fotget to disconnect power cord, extract the back battery and press ON 30 seconds before change it).

Hi Tim. Thanks for the response. I ended up installing Lubuntu and I still have the same 100% CPU problem, however I found some info on launchpad with other Dell users having the same issue and there was a solution posted there that I haven't tried yet. Good call on the CMOS battery because I think it's dead.

Just updating this in case someone else has the same issue: if you're running 18.04 on a Dell and you have 100% CPU usage, there is an update for bluez that should fix the issue. See: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1759836 for more info. This issue, I strongly suspect, was preventing me from completing the installation of Mate.
