Problems with GUI in MATE 15.04 PPC?

Folks:

After my U-MATE 14.04 install self-annihilated I was without a linux install on my iBook G4. Recently I tried to run an install of U-MATE 15.04 downloaded 5/8/15 for powerpc. Running the install “manually” as I usually do would not allow the install to complete, it would start the install and then it would “freeze” (BTW this same thing happened with a Lu 14.04 live-desktop as well) . . . leaving partial data.

I erased the partitions and ran the install as “automatic” “Install alongside OSX” . . . and the install went through. However on reboot I got to the U-MATE splash, then a dmesg-like menu . . . which then froze at “p link is down” . . . . I managed to get to Single user and was able to add an xorg.conf file and added the “radeon.agpmode” params to the Yaboot.conf and rebooted. This time again the GUI “crashed” and on Single user (after hard shut down) this time the screen went black . . . but TTY was opened . . . and I tried to update/upgrade . . . but that failed because the ethernet connection was “down.”

The next day I was able to “fix” the ethernet and ran a dist-upgrade, which included new kernel, and “dhcp” . . . rebooted into same problems . . . . So far have not been able to log into a GUI session, although the live DVD session worked OK. And now the Single user interface is sporadic . . . sometimes working, sometimes turning black. When the GUI crashes the TTY will not open, if I can get Single user before it “crashes” then I can get a TTY to open, although today when I tried for a TTY it also went black . . . . Seems like the system is “degrading” with use rather than getting better . . . . Today I tried to use python-apport to send whatever it would send to a bug that I thought was close, but that was a Lubuntu bug . . . however that failed because the GUI can’t open FireFox browser for me to “approve” the bug. I added “pastebinit” but I’ve forgotten how to use the console to get something to pastebinit . . . .

For all intents and purposes this system is not “Vivid” or “viable” . . . but, if someone can give me some things to try out to see if it can be re-Vivified I am happy to try them out . . . . Or, if someone has had similar issues and has a bug filed on it, let me know, perhaps I could somehow get my data added to it . . . .

Unfortunately Xorg 1.17 has some serious endian bugs which is the root cause of these issues  There are some PowerPC users in the Ubuntu MATE G+ community, look there as they have Xorg 1.16 packages available

Wimpy:

Thanks for the reply, and insight . . . "serious 'endian bugs'" kind of
hits the nail on the head . . . . Seems like multiple sites of breakage
are occurring . . . . But live DVD image seemed to be "OK" . . . ???
