It´s not Linux related but i figured it´s a small computer anyway. I bought a PS3 Slim Model CHECH-2104A for CFW Modding and i want to improve the thermals and lifespan. I bought EC360 Gold Thermal pads with 14,5 W/mK for the VRAM and VRMs and a Copper Headsink for both CPU and GPU. I want to use my X10 Polar Therm Thermal paste i already used for my laptop . The PS3 Slim is my first Console i gonna do that with, opening it up and working directly on the Hardware. I´m gonna measure before and after and i hope for a good improvement.
Has anyone here done something similar and can give me Tips or things to avoid?
I don't have any tips, but my brother is into retro consoles - but not hardware modding/cooling. Probably the usual thermal application tips that apply to PC hardware can work on consoles too.
PlayStation 3 is an interesting one since it did once have a "Linux" (Other OS) mode before a newer firmware removed it. Even the PlayStation 2 had its own Linux distro on disc (I'll have play with that one day)
With “CFW” Software modding i did, OtherOS is available as well. Also, i have and collect Data about Temperatures, also In-Game. But, it gives me so much Freedom, the functionality of the Console is increased extremely.
If you want to do it like me, what you need:
**4.93 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5)
multiMAN v4.91
-** **webMAN MOD v1.47.48n
**
With some work, you could even turn your PS3 into a FTP Server (i recommend LAN connection, much more stable then WLAN)
Look for tools and Mods on the official sites like brewology and psx-place.
Those circles are Copper Shims and the Pink stuff are Thermal pads. I have a hard time with my fine motor skills but i think i done a good enough Job with it. At least my PS3 seems healthy, Fan Speed is down from 40% to below 30%. CPU Temperatures are down from 66 °C or 150,8 °F to roughly 60 °C or 140 °F and even lower.
