Hi folks,
I’m wondering if anyone could give me insight on the differences between MATE and Unity, both 15.10, that would cause GPU lock every few seconds with MATE but no issue at all with Unity. I’ve not installed any additional drivers for either flavor, simply using what comes with each one, which appears to be the open source ATI drivers.
What I’m seeing:
Open a few applications, click the top window bar and drag the window around in circles until the screen becomes unresponsive, then goes black, then returns to an unresponsive but visible state, lastly to return to a responsive and operational state.
Hardware:
ATI Radeon HD 3200/RS780 onboard graphics
8GB Ram
Athlon II X3 (450, I think.)
I recently upgraded from 15.04 to 15.10 and it broke my system. Though, I suspect it was GPU related as well. Because of my own experience and also because of a number of reports I have read from other users who have had similar problems upgrading to 15.10, I have reinstalled 14.04 and intend to sit this one out till the next LTS. It only took a bit of post-installation tweaking to get my 14.04 LTS installation to have all the nice stuff in 15.04. So, I don’t feel like I am missing out. The main thing is that it is rock solid stable and that is very important for me.
I used to have this issue! I had to install the propriety drivers…I had an Nvidia GPU, and basically everything would lock up and the screen would turn black. Unity and windows would not cause my GPU to crash, only Ubuntu Mate.
