Not a life issue mind you…. but simple basic question…
Why is is that :
Rhythmbox on Ubuntu-Mate doesn’t show a volume cursor
while
Rhythmbox on Mint-Mate does show a volume cursor

It’s because UM distributes Rhythmbox with a minimum build, while MINT includes the “Alternate Toolbar” plugin with RB.
Does the “Alternate Toolbar” come with close app button as well. I really dislike Rhythmbox due to the lack of controls and that it is the default player in Mate. To often some file accidentally opens at full volume and it takes time to force shutdown of Rhythmbox.
So probably there is a mean to complete the full version in UM

Never got this kind of issue.
Here, also using Clementine and Shortwave.

I use RB all the time. I have tried Strawberry and Clementine and frankly I think they suck. With RB I can burn CDs, setup a variety of playlists, setup a music library and pipe it through my home stereo, listen to internet radio and FM stations and even sync my old iPod Classic. I can share music across my network, import and display cover art and I can even toggle the lyrics. I can run RB with my Android, sort my music and search with a variety of categories with a File Organizer and there is even a plugin that displays the tabletures so I can play along with my guitar (or try to anyway).
I have no idea why RB has such a bad rep. There are more stable plugins and feature for RB then any of the others out there.
So, I’ll try figure for an ‘upgrade’ with that “Alternate Toolbar” when spare time allows

I tried to recreate my experience and need to correct what I said. Let me re-phrase: You open a mp3 with Rhythmbox, but when you hit the close app button, the audio keeps playing. I then need to manually kill app through the system monitor at that point. I know I can do File/Close, and that works, but it is so intuitive just to hit the close button on the app window like almost all other apps.
I've been using Strawberry for several years now and it does what I need it to do.
Plus it has a volume cursor and when you close it out its stops playing.
It’s in the repositories, I install via Synaptic but for those who love the terminal that should be
sudo apt install rhythmbox-plugin-alternative-toolbar
Then on Preferences, go to Plugins (should be the last tab) to enable the new toolbar. Should work fine.
What Rhythmbox does instead of closing is to actually minimize to the system tray, so to speak (or the indicator, or the dock). So it keeps playing, and you have to click on the volume icon on the indicator and stop from there.
Thanks Claudio
The sound cursor is back

3.4.7. I know that is slightly outdated. I guess Mate updates are not going to do it. Synaptic is still at 3.4.7.
Hey, I found a plugin that actually closes Rhythmbox when you hit the Close button! ![]()
The old Gnome Wiki for Rhythmbox, althouhg it’s been retired, still hosts a long list of third party plugins, some work some don’t.
One of those plugins is “Close on hide”, and although it’s old, I mean really old (12 years old), it actually works.
Here is a way to add a PPA and then install the plugin. But I cloned the Github repository and copied the plugin manually, and it works. It closes and stops the music. Although the Rhythmbox process still stays running in the background, but silent.
Thanks. That worked.
Here too. Thanks Jaybo
