I have been using Ubuntu MATE 15.04 for about a week now and am quite happy with it. After trying several Linux distros, Ubuntu MATE seems to offer the perfect mix of stability, looks and performance.
There seem to be some minor problems however, I experience during booting and shutting down, that really slow things down. Included are screenshots of the moments when the shutdown and bootup process hang for a while.
Can anyone identify the problems?
Thanks.
Startup:
ACPI error (shows up before the Ubuntu MATE logo during startup)
USB errors during startup
Shutdown:
Stop job for CUPS even though I don't use any printer?
I canāt help, but I can report that I get similar problems practically every day (not the CUPS thing though), plus it sometimes takes forever to shutdown or reboot. And sometimes not.
Also attached USB devices sometimes disconnect. No messages issued.
I still mostly like Mate, but it can get a bit wearing at times.
I know an old media centre machine (by old, I mean old - BIOS dates back to 2004 and itās got a Pentium 4 with HyperThreading inside) that has the same āWait for device initializationā hang. It has had USB errors in the past (but not like yours) and sometimes doesnāt even turn off after shutdown - it just halts.
The start-up hang started after the upgrade to 15.04. It didnāt happen in 14.04, 14.10, so it could be the newer Linux kernel having some issues communicating with your hardware, or potentially a signalling a hardware fault.
Back to the media centre I mentioned, I think something is faulty inside that machine though, like I say, it doesnāt power off once itās shut down; and in the past has outputted something along the lines of āUSB enumeration at port ## failedā every second (making the console unusable from all that spam)
Equally, this could be caused by systemd (new default init system in 15.04), so you could try the previously used Upstart (some other distros like elementaryOS still use this at the moment) - To do so, hold SHIFT while your computer starts and try the āUbuntu ā¦ (upstart)ā option. I havenāt tested this myself so I canāt be certain systemd is the culprit here.
For the first error, the "ACPI PCC probe failed" error is actually harmless. I only just realised my main machine has the exact same message (except after 2.231240 seconds) but I have no problems with power management.
I have a different kind of issue during startup and shutdown. Iām on i386 15.04 ubuntuMATE. When I turn on my laptop, after pressing āenterā on grub boot screen to start ubuntu, my laptop goes into some sort of suspend mode i.e. screen turns off, power button blinking orange instead of continuous green. I press it again after a minute then lights go green again, screen turns on, ubuntuMATE lockscreen loads after a while and all is well.
For shutdown issue: After pressing shutdown, screen turns off, then goes into suspend mode again (orange blinking again; and it doesnt turn off even after a while). I have to press power button to āwakeā it, log screen turns on, I press shutdown using the menu again, and only then does it shutdown.
Help. Iām on Acer Aspire D250 netbook. If this is related, it detects that my battery is near broken (low capacity at 48%)
