I first started using Ubuntu as my main OS with 8.04 so I remember the gnome default. For a long time I did use the unity, and then later Xubuntu for the past 3 years, and now I believe Ubuntu Mate seem to have some thing. I love the Welcome screen and the ease of using and learning about Mate and how it shows alternative software for those who are new to Linux. I have become a fan of the topmenu and Synapse, they are great and make the experience fun.
