You're very welcome! It's great I can impart my wisdom & experience to an audience that appreciates it ![]()
Author of the article you are attacking here.
You are completely and entirely wrong.
No, the Reg is not shilling for anyone. Nobody tells me what to write. I pitch ideas at my editor and he chooses from them, and that is the extent of the editorial control.
I wrote more about ESR than RMS because the discourse these days is more about open source (which is ESRās term, along with Bruce Perensās) far more than it is about Free Software (which is RMSās term).
I absolutely reject your accusations.
Hi, @lproven and welcome to the Ubuntu MATE Community!
Thatās fair enough and thanks for even noticing my comment.
Iām a much bigger fan of ESR than RMS, just like yourself, as he has done more to advance FOSS than RMS. And Open Source and Free Software are 2 different things. Open Source is definitely more ābusiness friendlyā especially regarding the licencing.
Everyone is entitled to their misguided opinions and beliefs, myself included!
Welcome to the UM community, great to have you here!
I didnāt say that. I think you are projecting or something here.
I have been in this business for a long time ā Iāve been installing and supporting Unix boxes longer than Linus has been working on Linux ā but I wasnāt a full-time journalist for most of that time. Iāve never met or communicated with either Stallman or Raymond. (I have exchanged emails with Bruce Perens, as it happens.)
TBH while I think both have done good work, I suspect that overall, Stallman has had more beneficial influence, and was more right about more things. ESR seems to be inclined to paranoia and sometimes I get the impression that he opines ā vociferously ā about things he is not expert in.
Iād dispute that, too.
I agree with you: FS is not the same as OS.
I see OS as a way of communicating the benefits of FS to business people. FS is the more important idea.
Thanks again for all your explanations and background, itās very illuminating.
Sorry, I got the impression that you were a bigger ESR fan than RMS fan, my mistake on that one. I agree with almost everything ESR says regarding OS, and like 90% of people he likes to opine about issues he knows nothing about.
Itās a good thing that you're pushing FS, as it gives the user ultimate freedom to do as they like with their software vs some OS licences. But businesses generally are very averse to using FS as they then have to share their changes to the source code with their competitors. So itās going to be a tough slog convincing them to move entirely to FS, but I wish you all the best in your endeavours.
I buy refurbed hardware/devices and put LM, UM, Zorin OS & Chrome OS flex on them, and sell them to older users who wonāt/don't care about Win 11. My next project is setting up a LM/Chrome OS flex dual boot for an older customer moving away from using a Amazon firestick. It will cost him a little bit more, but he'll have much greater freedom to do what he wants to do with his device. And thatās the most important thing for any user.
Thank you @jymm for giving me the seal of approval, I feel very honoured ![]()
I think the most important thing is to put Linux on as many devices as possible and I'm doing my bit.
I also have to thank Microsoft for destroying the user experience with Win 11, otherwise some of my customers, particularly older individuals, would have never have moved away from Windows in the first place. Their loss is my income and Linux wins over more users. So itās a win/win in every sense.
