The future of Ubuntu MATE?

I used GVFS with SMB and SSH quite a lot, Caja would freeze when running under gnome-shell and opening a remote connection.

The future doesn’t look too bright imho:

We haven't seen LTS requalification requests from Ubuntu MATE nor Ubuntu
Unity, so these will release subject to release team approval, and they
will be non-LTS.

Is it guaranteed that neither UU or UM will be LTS for 26.04?

This is important news for me as I run both of these distributions.

With both current project leads having other interests and obligations and not having applied to the re-qualification requests, for which the deadline passed if i’m not mistaken, it looks like it.

Apparently, as from what we’ve seen on the Ubuntu Summit 2025 video’s, Martin’s focus is on Nøughty Linux (that’s the impression i get) and Rudra (current Ubuntu Unity project lead) has a too busy schedule with university exams and tests.

Me and Tobiyo tried to pick up the Ubuntu Unity project and made an announcement that we need help because of the lack of knowledge. We’ve pointed the people who want to help out the way, everything is on gitlab which we merge with Launchpad but only two people provided some fixes which still need reviewing and a sponsor to upload them. We have no one else as developer on board, except for one but he also has enough to do with Ubports. So for both projects it doesn’t look too bright at the moment. For us it’s hard to get a hold of our project lead and are kinda stuck.

Well that's a bummer to say to the least.

I don’t want to sound blunt or rude but i say as it is, it’s another nail to the coffin for both projects and expected some of the community at our end to step up and actually help. But as i have seen with so many projects i was involved in it’s not going to happen.

That is a real shame. I know I threw my hat in the ring to help on the Ubuntu forum but I have zero technical background and I unfortunately can’t take on learning how to program/code to a level to help the projects. I can write posts but that’s about it.

My next question is then, I have an Ubuntu Pro account. Can I technically squeeze the 10 years of support life (until 2034) for Ubuntu flavours (beyond the advertised EOL of April 2027)?

Ubuntu Pro is meant for main Ubuntu with LTS, not for the LTS Flavors since they are only supported for 3 years and from my point of view Ubuntu Pro is useless for home users.

Same here. It is understandable that project leaders move on and real life is always priority, so at some point this will happen on several smaller flavors.

Real life obligations is one thing, focusing on new project is another. Our lead for example had various different projects, the latest being BlendOS but it seems he dropped everything. with BlendOS other team members have taken over the tasks and it’s still going.

In general: As a project lead one needs to fulfill his/her obligation or move over and let someone else do it.

Not so sure about that unless it changed after this post:

As far it's usefulness to home users I guess that's up to each individual to decide.

Thanks for the heads up. I wasn’t aware of that and a misconception at my end.

To a point.Click on the link in my above post to get a good explanation of exactly what Pro entails for flavors.

Thanks, Norm, for this information.

I also noticed that I have this information in the “Software & Updates” program on my Ubuntu Unity 24.04 system, which matches how things were described on the forum post link you provided.

My Ubuntu MATE system is running 25.10, so I don’t believe I’m logged into Pro there. However, I would think it would be the same as they’re both Ubuntu Flavours.

I’ll mark your post as “Solved” as this is very useful information and this answers at least my latest question.

Jaymo

P.S. Yes this is the Ambiance theme and yes I still run Ambiant-MATE on my UM 25.10 system. Ambiance themes for the win!

It's hard because there's only so many developers out there with a passion for what goes into a Linux distribution and a desktop. I'm not one of them. If I'm going to do development work, it's going to be related to audio, video, machine learning, and not much else.

The bitter truth is that it is less work for me to find and adapt to a new distribution/desktop than it is to learn that side of development and help 'save' a Ubuntu flavour :frowning:

It'd be great to see Ubuntu MATE continue as I've had an excellent experience so far.

If I were a Patreon as several of you here are I'd be wanting to know where my monthly donation went as it would appear it didn't go towards Ubuntu Mate 26.04LTS.

That is a good point. I mean I always think with good intentions but as a Patreon I just want to know too, for myself.

Here's something to take a look at:

That's $4825.20USD collected in a year plus whatever was collected in one time donations.More than likely over $5000 is being collected in a year and yet they couldn't get in a LTS requalification request.Like Ricky Ricardo used to say "Lucy got some splainin to do".

And yet, someone seems to be working on the UM 26.04 release:

It won't be released as a LTS version as the team missed the re-qualification deadline.
