I am currently using Raspberry Pi 3 with Ubuntu-Mate 16.-04.2 and I have a Tp-Link T2U Archer with MediaTek chipset mt7610u,
It does not work with Ubuntu-Mate 16.04.2.
There are a large number of reports of problems with this adapter and the raspberry pi (not specific to the mate distro). If you google > tp-link t2u raspberry pi you can view some of these reports and their solutions, if any.
It is always a good idea to check for compatibility on-line before making a purchase because not every manufacturer of accessories is linux friendly and the RPi is a somewhat peculiar offshoot of linux due to its arm CPU (as opposed to x86 processors).
It looks like there may be a solution, but as I don’t own a t2u, I am not in a position to evaluate them.
