Try/install video problem

Hi,
Don’t know much about linux but from the description thought ubuntu mate might be good on an old Acer laptop but have tried all 3, 32 bit versions using the ‘try’ and ‘install’ options (booting from USB created using unetbootbin) and all I ever get, after an initial screen saying ‘ubuntu mate’ with progress dots, are strange lines on the screen.
Tried a couple of searches on the forum but haven’t found anything that helps so far.

Sounds like a graphics driver issue.

There's a procedure to try:

During boot hammer on the Escape key, you should get something like that:

Hit the F6 key, select the kernel parameter "nomodeset", hit enter to check it then escape to fold the menu.

Then, proceed to boot either try or install mode, if the parameter work you should see something.

Thanks for that, the ‘nomodeset’ worked.
It looked quite good in the try-no-install mode so decided to install it but everything seemed to go belly-up, resolution was quite good in trial but once installed I could only get 640x480, wifi also worked in the trial but not after install.
Did some reading about getting drivers but then the installer thing, can’t remember what it was called, kept saying there was another instance running and had to close it but couldn’t find anything and gave up at that point.
