I am very happy with 16.04 but would like to install 18.04 on another partition.
In the past every time I installed another distro, I had to manually edit grub.cfg to get it to boot to 16.04.
Is there a way to avoid that?

there is a package, grub-customizer
, that allows you graphically to configure boot options.
