How can I turn off the beep that occurs when I do a Save As for a file that already exists?
I looked all through /usr/share/sounds and none of the sound files matches.

Hi, @fixit7

Could you please tell us in what program(s) are you getting that "beep" sound that occurs when you do a Save As for a file that already exists? At least in LibreOffice Writer, in Ubuntu MATE 22.04 LTS ("Jammy Jellyfish"), I do not get any sound in that same situation.
Slightly related: I've noticed that you've also posted this same question in "Ask Ubuntu":
What about the following location?
/usr/share/sounds/mate/default/alerts$ tree
.
├── bark.ogg
├── drip.ogg
├── glass.ogg
└── sonar.ogg
0 directories, 4 files
By the way, GUI menu System > Preferences > Hardware > Sound somehow does not provide any choice on my UM installation despite that /usr/share/mate-media/sounds/mate-sounds-default.xml
lists above-mentioned files correctly.
I get more knowledge by doing so.
The beep occurs with both Pluma and Geany.
Hi again, @fixit7
Based on @ugnvs's good reply above - and the screenshot that he very nicely included in that reply - I think I found what you need to do to disable that "beep" / sound when overwriting an existing file. You have to click the second "Mute" checkbox in the same window of @ugnvs's screenshot. So, open the "Sound Preferences" window, by going to the "Ubuntu MATE Menu" -> "Preferences" -> "Sound". That should open the "Sound Preferences" window. In that window, check (click to activate) the "Mute" checkbox at the right of the "Alert volume:" slider in the "Sound Effects" tab, as illustrated below, in the following screenshot:
After doing that, click on the "Close" button, in the lower right corner of that window.
I hope this helps
I went to that directory and moved the files.
No change. I have searched my entire hard drive for that sound.
It is not present.
All I can think is that sound is embeded in the UM O.S. ???
To tell the truth, I have been tired of sounds long ago and have disabled them all (without muting audio per se) by selecting No Sounds
theme in the mentioned configuration dialogue.
You and ugnvs get the gold star.
