Fair article. MATE retains the usability factor that Microsoft nailed decades ago. GNOME just does what Unity was doing; the “waiting for Godot”, promising some mysterious holy grail of UI design that only GNOME agents can decode. KDE departed off into aping Windows 8. While LXDE, like MATE, is another die hard desktop environment (last time I checked). The joker card or wildcard could be Wayland as it might allow paradigm shifts into using the 3rd dimension in GUI’s but I don’t think anyone’s figured that out yet.

Don’t forget XFCE! They are pretty committed to not making useless changes to UI.
