Hi - I installed 16.04 LTS over 14.04 LTS with no issues and I wanted to install MATE over this. So I ran the following in terminal

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/ppa

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:ubuntu-mate-dev/utopic-mate

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install mate-desktop-environment-core

However after restart - nothing changed! I still have the 16.04 LTS version. Any ideas what to do next?

Thanks

Jeff

My broadband device, inserted into my Rasperry Pi 3 which is my home
wi-fi router, kept on disconnecting after about 20 minutes. I started
to investigate...

In log file /var/log/syslog of ubuntu mate 16.04 for raspberry pi 3 the
following error kept popping up:

“….rsyslogd-2007:
action 'action 17' suspended, next retry...“,
This error kept on filling up my syslog logfile. A sollution was
found through my friend google, I commented out the following lines
at /etc/rsyslog,d/50-default.conf

#daemon.*;mail.*;\

#news.err;\

#*.=debug;*.=info;\

#*.=notice;*.=warn |/dev/xconsole

The other service you also should consider to remove is :
sudo apt-get purge brltty
which also clutter the syslog file,
I created a file, alive.sh that retrieves an image from a weather site every 20 minutes, which is run from crontab, which keeps my link to the internet via the mobile broadband modem alive:

#!/bin/bash

wget http://www.1stweather.com/m...

sleep 5

date >> /var/log/alive.log # creates an entry in a log file to monitor the script

rm -rf AVN* # deletes the gif file

exit

After I did these adjustments my Ubuntu mate 16.04 for raspberry pi stay connected to the internet with my Mobile Broadband device.

Any other suggestions to keep my mobile broadband divice active would be appreciated.

How can I get the original 16.04 and not later updates (16.04.3). My R9 290 will not work with amdgpu-pro drivers beyond the original 16.04. All other versions are incompatible.

It is really a very good distro. Complet, clean, stabil, run fine in old and new computers. It's simple but very well organised. Have everything and support for everything that a end user need. Congratulations and Thanks to all.

Well, I downloaded the image and it works great with the Raspberry Pi 3B. However, it doesn't boot with the new Raspberry Pi 3 B+. I hope this will be resolved quickly, because the new Rpi 3B+ has 802.11ac which I desperately need as I have serious WiFi problems in 2.4GHz. I tested the B+ with 802.11ac running debian and it was heaven.

Is Ubuntu Mate16.04 LTS supported by Dell PowerEdge T630 server? Whether I need to install additional drivers or not?

Is Mate going to be updated for the new RPi 3B+? It won't run on it.

I am trying to find a clean ubuntu-mate distro for PI3b+ - have you come across any yet ? I know that you can hack a pi3 distro with an awful let of effort and a smudge of good luck, I was just hoping that there may be a clean version out there somewhere whilst we wait for the official image which I am led to believe will be issued in July - although not sure which July in which year.
